Here's one of my recent favorite press releases: Solar System object 3552 Don Quixote, which was previously thought to be an asteroid or a "dead" comet, is actually alive and well! Here's the story: Comet Found Hiding in Plain Sight
| With the help of NASA's Spitzer Space
Telescope, astronomers have discovered that what was thought to be a large asteroid called Don Quixote is in fact a comet. Image credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/DLR/NAU |

ReplyDeleteMy topic is the moons and rings of Saturn. This article is about the severe weather predicted on Titan, one of Saturn's moons. http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/cassini/whycassini/cassini20130522.html#.UkMYYxb3Axc
Hallie, this is very cool, but it's not technically a press release. It's a report about some recent research having to do with Titan, but it doesn't have the "breaking news" aspect that a press release does. Try your search again on nasa.gov and make sure to click "Press Releases" in the left-hand column.
DeleteMy topic is on Black Holes. This article talks about recent observations of very dense gas approaching the event horizon the black hole known as Sgr A, which is at the center of our galaxy.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.nasa.gov/press/2013/august/nasas-chandra-observatory-catches-giant-black-hole-rejecting-material/#.UkMeXoasiSq
.....My topic is also on Black Holes. I found this amazing website introducing the basic information of black holes. It provides little java games, such as "finding the invisible", and information about the distance and size of those supernovae.
ReplyDeletehttp://hubblesite.org/explore_astronomy/black_holes/modules.html
That's a really fun site, Sabre! But for TP 2 I am asking you to find a press release, which is a specific kind of article describing a recent scientific result about your topic.Try searching one of the sites I gave in the assignment.
DeleteMy topic is on Jupiter. This article is about a spot found on the lower part of Jupiter which resulted from an unknown object crashing and exploding into the planet's clouds.

Looks good, Marco -- just make sure to click on "The Full Story" at the bottom of that page to get the whole thing.
DeleteMy topic is extrasolar planets. This press release is about how the Kepler mission is locating exoplanet candidates at an incredibly fast rate. Many of these planets are located n the habitable zone of their local star, and could have the potential to support life. http://www.nasa.gov/home/hqnews/2013/jan/HQ_13-008_KEPLER_New_Planets.html
ReplyDeleteI am studying the cosmic web, and this article describes how scientists were able to make a 3D model of one of the filaments. They can now more accurately measure the elusive properties of the structure and gauge the depth and length as well.

Looks good, Nate. Like I said to Marco above, I think you should use the longer version of the press release, just so you have more information to work with. Follow the link at the bottom of the page you sent to get the full version.
DeletePaul Dohm ..... my topic is Exoplanets. The press release is about the discovery of a blue exoplanet, HD 189733b, located about 60 light years, which is one of the closest exoplanets observed. The planet would resemble Earth from afar.

Travis Greenwald..... My topic is the moon. The press release is about the water that was discovered on the surface of the moon and the research that is being done to it.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.nasa.gov/press/2013/august/nasa-funded-scientists-detect-water-on-moons-surface-that-hints-at-water-below/#.UkTTqhbvyu4
My name is Thomas Goode. My topic is gravitational lensing. The press release is about Professor Yoshiaki Taniguchi's discovery of the "Magatama" Galaxy. This galaxy is special because of the other galaxy that is very close to the "Magatama" Galaxy and together they create a lensing effect. Check out link
ReplyDeleteMy topic is the Kepler Mission of finding new earth like planets within the milky way galaxy. This press release is in regards to NASA's search for a new mission for the damaged Kepler spacecraft. This new mission would have to be performed with only the two remaining functional wheels of the spacecraft and flight thrusters.

ReplyDeleteThis is a really important topic that's affecting a lot of astronomers. But the link you've posted is not a press release. You want to look for an article that reports on a new, hot scientific result and is supposed to be distributed to media outlets. Try typing "Kepler" in the search box and then using the "Press Releases" filter option in the left-hand menu to narrow your results to press releases only.
DeleteThis press release is in regards to NASA giving up trying to fully recover the Kepler spacecraft, and are instead in the process of finding new missions that the damaged spacecraft can perform.

Matthew Connell. My topic is black holes. This article states that a black hole in the center of our galaxy could give off light brighter than the moon in the next year.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.examiner.com/article/supersized-black-hole-milky-way-belches-light-new-research-shows-event-to-ha
Matthew -- great story, but this is not the original press release. You have to click on a couple of links to find it, but you want the one from the University of Sydney.
DeleteThis is the link to the press release.

ReplyDeleteLauren Beaver: My topic is Pluto. This press release topic is Pluto's moons. The two smallest moons were discovered a few years ago, and they were finally given official names.
My topic is about Quasars/Blackholes and this press release is about how most quasars consume matter occasionally or "snacking" on objects in its host galaxy rather then consuming a constant supply of matter in massive quantities.

ReplyDeleteTopic: Hubble Telescope
Press Release: Hubble found the largest known cluster of stars which could help lead to discoveries about dark matter.

Michael BT... My topic is rotating black holes. This press release is about the 'birth' of a new black hole from a supernova explosion. The reason this article is interesting is because the explosion wasn't a typcal uniform explosion, it was an asymetrical explosion from the poles that shot matter out in 2 distinct beams from opposite sides of the star.

My topic is Dark Energy/Dark Matter. This press release is about how scientists were able to study dark matter filament for the first time ever.

Hi. So I found another article about Black Hole on NASA's official website. It is about a new supermassive black hole they found recently, and here is the link.

okay this is my third article. It is about how NASA 's recent discovery of massive black hole.
