Ready for launch!

Welcome to the course blog for FSEM 1111-74 at the University of Denver, Autumn 2013! This class will introduce you to some of the wonders of the night sky and how we know what we know about them. I'm looking forward to sharing all this with you, as well as helping you navigate your first year of college.

I'll use this blog to post announcements, due dates, interesting links and images, and discussion topics. Please add it to your bookmarks or feed reader, check back regularly, and add your comments! Contributing to the online discussion is a way for you to engage with the course material outside class time and boost your participation score. Remember that all posts and comments are public, so please keep your comments respectful and appropriate for all audiences, and don't post any personal or sensitive information.

To get us started, please introduce yourself in the comments to this post. Tell us what you'd like to be called, what your favorite astronomical object is and why, and something unusual or little-known about yourself. You're welcome to add links or any other comments as well. I'll start:

I'm Dr. Hoffman. My favorite astronomical object is Antares, the big red supergiant star in Scorpius; it's the orangey one at the bottom of this image. I like it because it's bright and easy to find and its name means "rival of Mars" in Greek. Its Arabic and Latin names mean "heart of the scorpion," but in Hawaiian, it's called Lehua-kona, or "southern lehua blossom."

Finally, a quirky fact about me is that I have walked on the German Autobahn. Your turn!

  8. ummm... My name is Yulin, but you can also call me Sabre, to make things easier. My favorite astronomical object is the Sun, because it is so powerful in our tiny solar system. It has been merciful so far, sustaining all the lives on earth, but if something really happens, it could destroy us in a split second.Last summer, i was in the middle of a 5k under over 100 degree in Sacramento, I just couldn't help but looked up the sky and thought: if you really wanna kill us, make it quick! lol
Fact about me; trap shooting and hunting,a nature lover.

  9. Hello! My name is John but I'd prefer to be called Jack. My favorite astronomical object would have to be Europa, otherwise known as one of Jupiter moons, because it could be the nearest celestial object to hold life. It's outer layer is ice and inner layer is a vast ocean with promise oxygen levels. A little known fact about me is that I have taken part in independently recording 2 albums, one of which is already released, the other will be released later this fall.

  10. Hi! My name is Thomas, you can call me Tom, Thom, ThomThom, really anything you want. I have 2 related astronomical objects! The first is the quasar Q2237+030 located about 8 billion light years from earth. And the second being the galaxy ZW 2237+030 also known as Huchara's Lens. The galaxy is closer to the earth than the quasar and the galaxy sits in direct line of sight from the quasar. The galaxy has the property of gravitational lensing which distorts the light from the quasar to create a spectacular image!
One quirky fact about me is that im a pilot!

  11. Hey, my name is James but I prefer to be called Jak. My favorite astronomical unit is Saturn's largest moon Titan. I like Titan because it is rich in hydrocarbons which are the building blocks of all life forms we know of. Furthermore, it was recently found to have a subsurface ocean that could potentially be home to basic life forms. A fun fact about myself is I spell my name Jak because those are the initials for my full legal name which is James Addison Kittoe.

  14. Hey, I'm John Howlette, you can just call me John. My favorite astronomical object would have to be black holes, since it's not really known what they'd do if someone were to travel into one of them. Something interesting about me is that I had leg surgery when I was three years old.
